Getting around Uptown

.

The Aquitania is located in the Uptown neighborhood— bordered by Edgewater to the north, Lincoln Square to the west, Lakeview to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east.

Uptown is a diverse neighborhood with recreational activities, shopping, entertainment, art, and dining destinations. The neighborhood originally grew as an entry port for many immigrants. The ranges for Uptown resident ages, length of residency, and ethnic backgrounds varied. Residents are incredibly supportive and involved in their businesses, block clubs, arts organizations, outdoor events, local community gardens, and public art – to note a few.

In 2020, Uptown was ranked 24th of the coolest neighborhoods across the globe by Time Out. And Uptown is the only Chicago neighborhood that made it into the top 40!

Districts

Uptown is large in size and divided into districts. Each district has its own history and personality. Depending on the source, the boundaries of each district may vary. Nevertheless, Uptown is a lively neighborhood!  Information on organizations to get involved can be found at the Uptown Block and Neighborhood Association.

ASIA ON ARGYLE

This district resides around the Argyle “L” station (Red Line). The district originated as a Jewish community. In the 1970s, Chinese entrepreneurs and immigrants from Vietnam and Cambodia migrated into the area. Additional residents came with the 1975 Fall of Saigon. This led the area to be transformed by successful new restaurants, bakeries, pharmacies, and social service agencies. Asian-Americans continue to move into the area. Unique shared-street design allows businesses to operate sidewalk cafes and provides space for hosting street festivals.

BUENA PARK

Buena Park, situated between Lake Michigan and Graceland Cemetery, is recognized as a historic district. Lined with trees and Prairie-style historic mansions, Buena Park was developed as a rustic retreat from urban life in the 1860s. By the 1930s, Buena Park took on its current character, largely due to the construction of the “L.” In recent years, many high rises have been built in the area, but it retains much of its historic architecture, particularly in the Hutchinson Street area.

MARGATE PARK, LAKESIDE, CLARENDON PARK, AND THE LAKEFRONT

Facing Lake Michigan, this area is renowned for its many lakefront amenities and a concentration of residential high-rises alongside historic residential buildings. In warm months, the Margate, Lakeside, and Clarendon Park area welcomes thousands of visitors to Montrose Beach and Harbor. Montrose Beach features food concessions, kayak and beach volleyball court rentals, showers, restrooms, and an ADA-accessible beach walk. A dog-friendly beach is located at the north end of Montrose Beach. Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary attracts birdwatchers to see over 340 species.

The Clarendon Park Fieldhouse is home to the Garfield-Clarendon Model Railroad Club and features The Garfield Central, a model railroad with over 1,400 feet of hand-laid track. The fieldhouse is also home to Kuumba Lynx, a 25-year-old urban art youth development organization.

SHERIDAN PARK

Sheridan Park is along Wilson Avenue west of Broadway, and is adjacent to Truman College. This area is known for its historic homes and small businesses and is also famous for large-scale events like Chicago’s Pride Parade and Windy City Rib Fest.

In 1985, the Sheridan Park Historic District was established to protect the unique single-family homes and smaller multi-family architecture in the area. Some of the large single-family homes and apartment buildings along Dover Street date to the early 1900s. In 2007, Dover Street was established as a City Landmark District.

ANDERSONVILLE & EAST RAVENSWOOD

Andersonville is a popular shopping and dining destination. Less well known is that its southern half extends into Uptown as the blocks along Clark Street south of Foster Avenue lay within the Uptown community area. This commercial area is known for its Swedish heritage and a concentration of locally owned restaurants and shops.

Andersonville is primarily a residential community filled with vintage homes and apartment buildings. Clark Street is appreciated for its shops and restaurants, and for the renowned Black Ensemble Theater. Lawrence Avenue and Montrose Avenue are home to many restaurants and shops, especially near the Montrose “L” station and Ravenswood Metra station.

Ward 48

Chicago is unusual among major United States cities in the number of wards and representative aldermen that it maintains. Currently, Chicago has fifty wards with fifty aldermen. The goal of the wards is to promote diverse and cultural representation on the City Council.

The 48th Ward consists of Uptown, Edgewater, and Andersonville neighborhoods. The Aquitania resides in this ward.
